The Music of Burzum and the
Writings of Varg Vikernes

Scream Magazine interview

Interviewer: Anton Mercoll

Most people has heard about Burzum. Even more have heard of Varg Vikernes, better known as the Count. He is in jail right now, doing time for the murder of Mayhem-frontman Euronemus. And how is life in jail?

I'm in isolation right now, and therefore I'm not allowed to do anything. But usually I read quite a lot and write letters. I'm off to school at 7.30 AM to 2.30 PM. Then we have dinner. I have to share everything with 10 other prisoners, toilet, shower and kitchen. In the cell I'm in right now it's so cold that I have to sleep with all my clothes on. They won't give an owen because they're afraid that I'm going to start a fire! But, I'm starting to get used to all the bullshit that's going on in here.

When will you get the chance to be out on parole?

When you have done 1/3 of the time, you can get parole. First for 12 hours, and eventually you can get 18 days.

Over to the music. Varg Vikernes is "famous" and has given Norwegian black metal a face. So how is the Norwegian black metal-scene right now?

As far as I'm concerned there has never been any black metal scene in Norway. This scene that you're refering to has been created by the media. An this so called inner circle was just one of Euronemus stupid visions. Everybody thinks that the reason why Darkthrone stayed low was because they wanted to get out of the "inner circle", but the truth is that they wanted to get away from Euronemus.

There are some rumors that you have started your own organisation?

Yeah, and it's called Norsk Hedensk Front. This is a political organisation that has a task force of keeping everything threathening to us Norwegians away, and with this I mean things like religion and rase.

You have a new album just released. What is your personal view on "Filosofem"?

It was recorded a long time ago, so I don't really remember too much of it. But I like all my songs.

They are very depressive at times?

Yes, but they are depressive in a very aggressive way.

What will happen with Burzum now?

I recorded an new album when I was in prison in Bergen. It's called "Balder's Død" ("The Death Of Balder" in english). I used only one guitar and synths during the recording. It will probably be released towards the end of the year.

What kind of music inspired you when you recorded "Balder's Død"?

Hmmmm, I listended a lot to Bach, Grieg and Beethoven at the time, and put in some old Bathory as well, and I think I have mentioned them all.
