Sirius Explained; Part II

An Ancient Culture

The evidence brought to you in Part I, paints an abstract but nonetheless compelling picture of what may have been an ancient seagoing culture who travelled the globe somewhere around 10,000BC, and whose advanced mathematics, astrology and architecture was either rediscovered or else inherited by the diverse civilisations that followed, which we now call the Egyptians, the Mayas, the Aztecs, and so on. What else could we arguably infer about them?

Religions

If such a civilisation had spiritual beliefs, then the evidence points to the fact that these beliefs revolved around the stars. The Mayas performed the "Opening of the Mouth" ceremony upon sacrificial victims on the solstice, and believed their souls would go straight to the heaven and become immortal stars. The Egyptians also conducted a ceremony called the Opening of the Mouth on their dead, in order that they may travel to the skies and become immortal stars. Like the remains in Nazca and Cambodia, both cultures show immense understanding of astronomy and astrology. If they indeed also built the many megalithic formations around Europe, pregnant with astrological correlations, then we have a culture which must have prized a search for understanding of the Cosmos above all other concern.

Men Become Gods

Let us return to the Americas, and this time to the legendary citadel at Teotihuacan, 50 miles north east of Mexico city, where there stand the most magnificent of pyramids. No one knows who built them, but myths say that the art of pyramid building was brought to Teotihuacan long ago by a Serpent God.

The name Teotihuacan means "The Place Where Men Became Gods", hinting at the basic doctrine underlying the beliefs that in the East later became Hinduism and eventually what today is called paganism. The magnificent Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan incredibly has an identical base length to the Great Pyramid of Egypt. Just like its Egyptian counterpart, it too highlights an astrological constellation as it would have appeared thousands of years ago. Indeed, the pyramid itself seems to have been built on what may be lava tunnels, which are offset at 15.5 degrees from North to highlight the constellation. Who built the Pyramid of the Sun? Were they paying tribute to the lava tunnels worshipped by an ancient civilisation who gave them such technology?

Certainly whoever built the pyramid had a most advanced knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. The circumference of the citadel is scaled exactly to a 100,000:1 ratio of the circumference of the earth, and the pyramid width is exactly a 100,000:1 ratio of the radius of the Earth, showing knowledge of information that should have remained unknown for millennia to come. The engineer Hugh Harlastan has made thousands of measurements at Teotihuacan and shown that its creators also encoded equations of time in its building. They used a line to represent area, area to represent volume, and volume to represent time. Encoded in their system is nothing less than the correct speed of revolution of the Earth. Harlastan also calculated their unit of measurement (what we would regard as 5.9cm+/metre unit). It is, according to his research, the same unit of measurement used on the Giza plateau in Egypt.

Elsewhere in Mexico is the site at La Venta, regarded as one of the earliest remaining examples of civilisation. Until destroyed to make way for oil processing plants, there stood at La Venta two pyramids. In these pyramids was yet again evidence of people who watched the skies and who possessed advanced knowledge of astronomy. They are called the Olmecs, but their real name is lost to history. All that remains of them are huge stone statues, and within them a remarkable puzzle. For all the statues depict proud Africans and even bearded caucasians; two groups who simply should not have been able to have been present in Mexico over three thousand years ago. And yet they seem to have arrived together. The beard has been much debated, but it certainly seems to very deliberately represent a caucasian, and the massive God-like statue heads clearly depict fully African features. All we know is that these and other depicted groups appear adorned with images of serpents. The Mayan mythology speaks of plumed serpent gods, arriving with "boats that moved without paddles", having come from a land drowned by waters. And again, we hark back to Egypt, where the journey to immortality is depicted with a human soul resting on a feathered serpent.

Egypt revisited

So again we have evidence of an emerging world culture, each incredible but each arguably founded on the knowledge of an ancient lost civilisation. This is not in fact a new idea; biblical scholars had long suggested that civilisation began in Egypt, and simply diffused around the world. The founder of anthropology, Tyler, had a similar idea. He postulated that civilisation grew like a tree from Egypt, passing through the many stages such as barbarism and tribal cult before finally flowering into the civilisation we have today.

Great civilisations such as the Mexican ones caused him problems, because by maintaining sacrificial or "dark age(evil)" practices in huge and magnificent structures they seemed to occupy different stages of the evolutionary ladder at once. The obvious answer seemed to be that these cultures may have inherited the technology and the cities from someone else. History has proved Tyler wrong however, and time and time again we have been shown that it would unwise to correlate supposed 'ethical' outlook with technical achievement. The march of history is a strange one, and there is no real archaeological doubt that the peoples of the Maya did in fact build the structures that are attributed to them; after all, neither the Egyptians nor our ancient civilisation could possibly have been in Mexico as late as 1000BC.

The puzzle actually concerns the sacrificial rituals as well as the structural achievements. Just like the megalithic monuments of Europe, there is paradox of advanced knowledge and yet naturalistic beliefs and practices. Coupled with the repeated emblem of the serpent throughout South America, Egypt, Europe, Asia and beyond, we are again presented the notion of an ancient and advanced paganistic civilisation which sowed the seeds - if not built the means - of all these different cultures. Tyler's problem is not a problem at all if these supposedly contradictory elements ('pagan sacrifices' and yet 'advanced technology') are in fact the hallmarks of a fully fledged paganistic civilisation that existed many aeons ago, who reconciled naturalistic living with advanced knowledge of mathematics, architecture and science, much as Varg envisages his Utopia.

Atlantis

One theory links the myth of Atlantis with the possibility that this once provided the ancient home - or at least was visited by - this ancient civilisation. Certainly there are countless stories of Atlantis, and at many points in history its existence was taken as fact. However, it should be noted that much of the preceding discussion is based on very certain evidence, and so it would be unwise to unnecessarily make the unproven existence of an ancient island the fulcrum of any such theory. Numerous land masses have gone under the waves, and the idea of the flooding of an ancient world is not particularly remarkable in itself, given the grandiosity of the rest of this argument. However, if we look at the large scale changes that occurred 10,000 years ago as ice as the seas flooded many areas of the world, we can make some interesting suggestions. We have already mentioned Carnac, and it too has a long history of myths concerning floods. Could the rising waters have forced the relocation of an ancient and advanced civilisation who flourished 10,000 years ago? Could those changes have been what necessitated their mastery of the seas? Could this be the basis of the Atlantis myth? The Andean temples at Tianhuanaco also speak of the coming of an ancient civilisation whose lands were drowned beneath the waves.

A return to Giza

Ultimately all roads lead back to Egypt. The giza plateau's recreation of Orion, the serpent symbolism, the quest for immortality, the importance of the stars.. Egypt - and the Sumerian empire - contains the oldest confirmed evidence of civilisation. So if the Egyptians inherited their knowledge, where did they find it, and where did they put this information?

Sirius

The answer to this question is said to lie with Sirius, as the reader probably already suspected. Sirius has a long and distinguished legacy in mankind's history. Sirius was since the very earliest times the brightest star in the sky. It possesses and exquisite bluish-purple sparkle, which must have greatly impressed ancient astronomers.

It's unusual movements in the sky have at various times caused ancient watchers of the sky to refer to it as the "centre of the universe". Sirius is located just below the Orion constellation, and together this unit forms one of the most distinctive navigational markers in the night sky. Sirius also appears highly mobile throughout time in the night sky, moving approximately one degree every 3000 years, relative to Orion. This may not sound much on paper, but if viewed across generations it is easy to imagine ancient cultures seeing it as having immense significance in relation to the passage of time itself; nothing less than a cosmic temporal marker in the heavens.

The astronomers of Egypt, and perhaps their predecessors, marked the New Year with the helical rising of Sirius. It is not surprising that they were impressed by it. Rising at the break of dawn in around 3400BC, Sirius would have suddenly become visible for the first time on Summer Solstice after 70 days of invisibility. This would have coincided with the rising of the waters in the Nile and eventual flooding (due to the tropical rains at that time of year in Africa). This unusual chain of events would certainly have cemented any spiritual beliefs surrounding Sirius, which may have been handed down from an earlier culture. The 'rebirth' of the Nile powered by the "rebirth" of Sirius (invisibility & helical rising).

As such Sirius was deeply integrated into the whole Egyptian spiritual paradigm, becoming a simple of birth for the pagan gods. The question is, how far back did the importance of Sirius date? Certainly if the pyramids were indeed built or planned around 10,500BC to match Orion, then Sirius by association was also deeply routed into whatever code that ancient civilisation left for their descendants. Given its movement relative to Orion - indeed, commanding Orion, then if the Egyptians were building the pyramids based on inherited knowledge or instruction, the location of Sirius in that sky should correspond to an even more impressive or fundamental tribute than the pyramids themselves.

Operation Hermes

Nigel Appleby has taken it upon himself to find what in myth and script is known as the "Hall of Records", an ancient location that holds the secrets of the Egyptian culture. If they were truly influenced by an ancient culture before them, then he argues that they either left the evidence in what their Gods (the ancient civilisation of 10,000BC) would have considered the most holy of all astronomical locations, or else found it there in the first place. Having studied countless scripts and archaeological texts, he believes that this location is marked directly by the position of Sirius as it would have appeared in 10,500BC. This is an unexplored site some 8 miles North of the Great pyramid.

One would think that from here it would be simple to find out whether or not Sirius marks the spot. However, the Egyptian authorities appear to have thwarted his efforts to investigate there, even though satellite images show that some kind of underground structure does appear to be present. The saga is well documented and ongoing, so I will leave people to investigate it for themselves and reach their own conclusions. For those who enjoy conspiracies, they will have a field day here, such is the scope of the government interaction preventing the Sirius connection being explored.

However, Appleby's own efforts seem to have a somewhat bizarre and counter-productive trait to them; he trains his 18 man team like Commandos. They wear camouflage gear and assemble mobile helicopters at dawn. What he expects to find in the Hall of Records I do not know, but this paramilitary image seems to only further fuel the general controversy, even if it should go down well with the Burzum community.

The Cosmos

And so to Sirious and beyond. Since the Hall of Records remains at present undiscovered, theories of other worlds must wait to see what secrets the past shall yield. Some have pointed to the "face" at Cydonia on Mars and suggested its similarity to the Sphinx and Olmec images. But there is something more remarkable much closer to home. In 1997 in the Temple of Seti I at Abydos, an amazing find was discovered, of which few images exist and which remains under police guard at all times. Nevertheless, the images have now been accepted in the academic community as genuine and been inspected by various sources, so the debate is over what the hieroglyphic is displaying. Some say they see nothing remarkable, others say that the hieroglyphic is clearly depicting flying machines. I will refrain from commentary, since I have said so much already, and simply post pictures below. Likewise I'll send some to Varg if he doesn't have them, and each person can make up their own mind as to what they may represent.

All I will say is, taking the issues holistically, I hope we find a future that is as remarkable as our past.
